The world's only preserved 17th-century ship, raised from the harbour after 333 years.
The Vasa Museum exists for a single, extraordinary object: a 64-gun warship built in 1628 that sank twenty minutes into its maiden voyage. Three centuries later it was raised — almost perfectly preserved — from the cold, brackish mud of Stockholm harbour. Today it stands seven storeys tall inside a purpose-built museum on Djurgården, 98% original timber, every carved face and lion still in place. Walk the four levels for changing perspectives, watch the 17-minute English film, and don't miss the new conservation lab where you can see the ongoing PEG treatment of the original wood. Allow 2 hours minimum. Time-slotted tickets sell out — book online.
